When Gabby was looking for a way to live closer to her mom, Clara, in Montebello, she found the right solution by building an ADU in Clara’s backyard — and the right ADU partner in Revival Homes.
Choosing the Right ADU Partner
When we met Gabby, she was renting an apartment in South Pasadena. She was eager to move into a larger home that would provide her with enough backyard space for her two dogs, as well as adequate parking for her business’ food truck. She also wanted to live in the same neighborhood as her mom, Clara. Gabby and Clara decided that building a 1-bedroom ADU in Clara’s backyard would be the right housing solution.
Although Gabby had been researching the ADU process for nearly 2 years, she still hadn’t found a dependable, trustworthy contractor for the project. One contractor had quoted her an extremely high price for the project, and pressured her to use a relative’s mortgage brokerage. Additionally, Gabby and her mom were planning to finance the project together, and they needed clear guidance on different funding options. Gabby was in need of an all-in-one ADU partner that could give her the confidence she needed to move forward.
That’s where Revival Homes came in. First, we provided Gabby with a detailed construction cost estimate for her ADU project, based on our previous project experience. This gave Gabby and Clara a clearer sense of how much they’d need to borrow in order to finance the project. Then, after advising Gabby and Clara that a home equity line of credit would likely be the most affordable financing option available, we connected them to our lending partner. Our partner provided Gabby and Clara with multiple HELOC options, prequalified them, and helped them secure a HELOC, allowing them to move ahead with construction.
At the same time, Revival Homes matched Gabby to Ric, one of our most experienced and popular ADU contractors. He quickly met with Gabby and Clara, provided a clear and fair project bid, and the three of them decided to work together on building the ADU.
The Finished Product
Just three months after receiving the permit, Ric and his team completed construction on Gabby’s ADU. The 600 square foot, 1-bedroom space is anchored by a large, open-plan living room and kitchen area. The space’s long open windows and double glass doors let in plenty of light, as well as a pleasant view of the backyard (also helping Gabby keep an eye on her two energetic dogs.) The vaulted ceiling further adds to the sense of light and space.
Ric and Gabby collaborated throughout construction to design a kitchen that fully met her sense of personal style. Gabby selected classic white appliances that matched the cabinetry, butcher-block countertops, a farmhouse sink, and a kitchen island that doubles as a dining area. The end result is a space that’s well-appointed while still cozy and compact.
Now that Gabby is fully moved in, she’s enjoying the easy proximity to her mom — and her two dogs are happier than ever, since they have a fenced-in backyard to run around and play in.
